Responsibilities
The individual selected for this position will lead research to develop and commercialize polymers and additives for extrusion coatings and other polymer based applications in the Coatings and Inks business at Eastman.
As a senior scientist, lead projects with global teams focused on extrusion coating applications.
Apply deep understanding of extrusion coating formulation and application processes to develop prototype polymers and additives for web coating.
Work with internal capabilities and 3rd party web coaters to develop prototype coated webs and other technical solutions.
Establish internal testing capabilities to validate performance of developmental products and benchmark materials.
Determine fitness-for-use criteria for specific customer applications and reduce these to research programs to develop new polymers and additives.
Identify knowledge gaps and lead research efforts to develop new products.
Network with a cross functional team across R&D, marketing, sales and manufacturing to develop products which can transition quickly to commercialization.
Provide technical support to coaters and converters during product scale up and commercialization trials.
Develop technical literature to support new products or techniques.
Serve as a technical expert on extrusion coating formulations and processes.
Serve as a resource for internal and external customers on market specific product and process technology.
Establish peer level connect with the external technical community in order to maintain an up to date understanding of market dynamics, regulatory trends and competitive intellectual property.
Support quality, health, and safety initiatives as they relate to formulation, material safety, and technical data sheets.
Attend trade shows and technical conferences to align with market trends and establish/strengthen market connect.
Travel to customers to discover needs, match fitness for use characteristics with product offerings, and support new sales opportunities through qualification.
Mentor and support development of technicians and other technical personnel.

Engage with customers to understand needs and to establish Eastman s credibility as a reliable high quality supplier and development partner.
Assess and communicate customer needs and project results to Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Technology, and business partners, tailoring the communication to the audience.
Document results accurately and in a timely manner using e-notebook, technical reports, and invention reports, as required.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support new product commercialization, as required.
Qualifications
A bachelor s degree in polymer science, paper science, coatings, packaging, materials science, physics, or a plastics related field.
At least 8 years of professional extrusion coatings experience.
A track record of leading technical projects in web coating process development.
OR
A Master s or PhD degree in polymer science, paper science, coatings, packaging, materials science, physics, or a plastics related field.
At least 5 years of professional experience in extrusion coatings.

Qualifications:
Able to relocate to Kingsport, TN.
Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work as a part of a cross-functional team.
Work experience related to extrusion, web coating, and coated product testing is preferred.
Experience qualifying extrusion coatings formulations is preferred.
Working knowledge of polymer science is preferred.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
