Full-time (scheduled 72 hrs or more per pay period) Job Definition Job DescriptionSCOPE OF POSITION The Pathology Technician functions as an essential aid to the Pathologist, Pathologist Assistant and/or Pathology resident.
He/she is primarily responsible for the daily operations of the gross room and morgue.
Productive quality work is critical to the accurate diagnosis from patient specimens.
Must be willing to work within a team environment and to cross-train as necessary.
Responsible for instrument maintenance and documentation of recording Quality Control in the gross room; the accessioning of patient anatomic specimens; provision of tissue cassettes for anatomic specimens; the discarding of specimens after the appropriate time; the neutralizing of formalin waste; and maintenance of stain lines and cryostats as assigned.
This position is responsible for maintaining supply stock needed to perform duties within the gross room and morgue.
Responsibilities also include the answering of the gross room phones and the provision of answers to questions from physicians and nurses relative to the anatomic specimens.
Other tasks may be assigned by supervisor, pathologist, or technical specialist; therefore, cooperation and flexibility are required.
Professionalism and customer service are required at all times as this position interacts with clients, physicians, and other medical and non-medical staff on a daily basis.
A high degree of cooperation, consideration and sensitivity is essential when communicating with internal and external customers.
He/She must be able to demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness to help resolve or refer problems to the appropriate authority for final resolution or follow up.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP See Table of Organization.
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE Associate's degree in health related field.
In lieu of degree an equivalent of two or more years of work related experience is required.
Well versed in medical terminology.
Computer literacy is required in accessioning/retrieval of patients' reports.
